U.S. Forgoes Salmonella Vaccine Despite British Success

According to The New York Times, the United States recently suffered a Salmonella outbreak. In the U.S. it is a very big deal for an outbreak of Salmonella to occur because alot of the population eats eggs. Eggs are also a very important part in baking and other types of food products. In the early 1990's in Great Britain there was a similar outbreak of Salmonella. Great Britain decided to create a vaccine and inject all chickens with the vaccine. The vaccine lowered the Salmonella bacteria by over 90%. Even with these facts presented the U.S. still decided to not accept the vaccine risking future outbreak of Salmonella.

It should be a law for all farmers to vaccinate their chickens. With the vaccination eating chicken products would be much safer because their would be no risk of Salmonella poisoning. If someone gets Salmonella poisoning they can get really ill and even die. So the vaccine would also help reassure the population of another outbreak. The vaccine will pay for itself with the fewer costs of medical problems and other significant problems. In this economy and with the healthcare we have now we can't afford to have more health problems.

I think that U.S. should also vaccinate all of the chickens as Xalex said because chicken is a big big food source in the U.S.. Also that if there isnt a vaccination we should kill off the chickens that are sick so they don't have a outbreak... Nice blog

I also believe that the U.S. should start using this vaccine. The American population consumes tons of products that contain egg, and it can be deadly if they have salmonella in their food. Yet, I disagree on that it should become a law to vaccinate all chickens with it. I think that farmers should have a choice whether or not they want to do that with their livestock. Even so, I believe thousands of farmers would vaccinate their livestock if the U.S. Government gave them the chance.
