In a ladder tournament, it could be a best of 3, best of 5, and rarely best of 7. The current most popular e-sport is Starcraft: Brood War. It is a real time strategy game where you can build up and economy and train soldiers to counter your opponent. It does not need physical strength but you have to memorize the unit counters and the build orders. The only similar thing to the others sports is how fast can you react to your opponent's strategy.
American ideology is that the people have to be strong to be an athlete. I think it is a good thing that the e-sports started so now people can focus on building their mind instead of their body. This way the world can move forward and boosting the intelligence of human kind.

Awesome post. Ive been playing these games you mentioned in your post and it does require alot of memorization to master it. Compared to athletic sports you really dont need that much physical skill just able to remember things well. Posing a problem to all those who are all about bigger muscles and smaller brain power :D
